Announcing the launch of Square One Crafts

For those who’ve arrived here from my previous blog, Lilac Crafts, may I welcome you to Square One Crafts. This blog is a joint crafting adventure for me and Chris, he’s starting to get quite crafty and I thought it only fair that we share :)

No doubt there will be a few glitches here and there, if you find any problems, please let me know.

Oriental Wind Chime

This was one of those projects that I put off starting for days. I only needed to measure 6 lengths of jute to be used doubled over giving me 12 cords. But…and it’s a big BUT…each cord had to be 17½ yards long!

Sat there surrounded by so much jute, I knew how a fly felt trapped in a spiders web. My usual method of leaving the cords was not going to work, so each one was tied up into a butterfly with an elastic band. I referred to them as my puppies because they kept leaping about all over the place.

The finished Wind Chime was well worth the struggle. It is 72cm in length from the top of the hook to the bottom of the longest bell. The bells themselves are Indian and the beads are traditional wooden macrame beads.

My intention was to put this up for sale straightaway, but I’m going to keep it for a bit longer to admire it before I give someone else the pleasure of hanging it in their home :)

Cottontail Hanging

Made from cotton and using a combination of bead knots, flat knots, daisy pattern, cording and banister bars. It is 37cm in length, 10cm wide. Click on image for larger picture.

Planet with two suns

The full title is ‘Waiting to be rescued from the planet with two suns’; the eponymous suns being represented by two pieces of red bubblewrap. I showed admirable restraint, I think, in resisting the urge to pop the bubblewrap…er…suns. The spaceship — an impromptu piece of quilling — looks like a smile, don’t you think? Let’s hope the astronaut family manage to get away safely. [Space fans, click on the image below to see it muchos bigger. ]

Tribal Figure

I found a new technique for making a berry knot and it seemed a waste just to put it to one side as a sample piece. So I turned it into this little Tribal Figure. I think it could possibly be a fertility symbol, certainly a good luck charm :)

Gothic Towers Wall Hanging

I took inspiration for this from one of our macrame books, a love of architecture and Ptolemy Dean our favourite architect.

It measures 30cm across and 50cm in length and I used natural and black jute. It may only be a small piece, but it took a surprisingly long time to complete, there is more to macrame than simply tying a knot!
