A good gardener should always have a motto, a suitably pithy bit of wisdom intended, at least on the surface, to enlighten the recipient. The real purpose of a motto is, however, to deter anyone who asks you for free gardening advice from bothering you with daft questions. Here’s what I always tell people.
Never put off until tomorrow a job that you can put off for a month. Or preferably two months.
Well, that used to be my motto, but after today’s postprandial pottering (a good hour or two clearing weeds from the back border) I’m a changed man. An achey man too, thanks for asking. Tomorrow, after a decent interval to let my Bananabix ™ digest, Shana and I will spend another hour clearing weeds from the side border.
So many weeds! Still, I guess it proves our garden is still fecund.
My new motto is: always get on top of your gardening jobs — before the jobs get on top of you. And bearing in mind that tomorrow’s job involves more than a few nettles, I don’t think either of us wants those sting-y blighters getting on top of us.
Where’s me flamethrower?
