As I’m sure many of you know, knitting is very relaxing. So when I was knitting part of the outfit for Freya earlier, I wondered where the word ‘Purl’ came from.
There are in fact several definitions, though the origins of the word are uncertain. It is mainly used to describe ripples or undulations, which is probably the reason it is used in knitting. Because a finished piece of knitting where the Purl Stitch has been used looks ribbed or wavy.
It can also be used to describe a gentle murmur which is also appropriate, I’m sure I’m not the only one who purrs while they knit!!
I have however decided not to say too much about Purl being a malt liquor, I want to make sure I don’t drop any stitches!

good post! so interesting that you posted about this long before it came up on ravelry.
