Dances with Morris Men

Although I’ve been able to knit since I was knee high to a ball of wool, it is only now I’ve decided to have a go at knitting with double ended pins, or as they are more correctly known DPN’s.

My Grandma taught me to knit, which wasn’t easy as she said I was cack-handed, more like plain clumsy! I was in awe of my Grandma’s knitting skills, there was nothing she couldn’t knit. As a treat she used to take me to the wool shop to choose a pattern and some wool, the item I chose was usually knitted by the next day.

Sadly my Grandma died a few years ago so I can’t ask her to help me out…but then again…

I had no problem with using DPN’s, I was so surprised that I picked it up so easily and so quickly. It’s great fun and highly addictive! So yesterday I decided to move on to using 5 needles

Using two needles I knitted a rectangular piece in garter stitch, then picked up stitches from the row ends and the bottom so I ended up with four DPN’s loaded and ready to knit. And then I had a problem. No fourth needle, doh, how stupid can I be!! However, I had an old pair that had cheap plastic ends which I managed to pull off.

At first it was tough going as I already had a base to knit up from, and I wasn’t happy with just doing one colour, I wanted stripes as well. But slowly it started to come together. When I finish I will be turning it inside out. I read somewhere that knitting with DPN’s was like wrestling with hedgehogs, but for me it was more like doing one of those dances with Morris Men where they use their sticks!!
